Ebola Virus

Another viral disease that swept the world in fear is the Ebola virus disease. Ebola was first discovered simultaneously is 2 locations in 1976 in South Sudan and Congo, where Ebola river is located. It was discovered to be another RNA type viral disease. In recent years, Ebola caused the infamous West African Ebola outbreak, sweeping the world in shock.

The RNA type virus takes natural host on fruit bats and is introduced to humans through any means of contact with these bats (physical, blood, bodily fluids). This is then transmitted to other individuals through the same means, whether it is Direct Contact or Indirect Contact. Upon contact, the Ebola virus can dig into the new host's broken skin and infect.

Symptoms

The incubation period seems to be at average, 2 days to 3 weeks. Some of the mild symptoms found in this period are:

  • fever,

  • muscle pain,

  • sore throat,

  • headache.

These symptoms are later followed by

  • vomiting,

  • diarrhoea,

  • strong rashes,

  • kidney and liver malfunctions,

  • in rare cases, internal and external bleeding can occur, causing fatal damage to the patient.

Unless treated immediately with care, these symptoms will soon magnify and may ultimately kill the patient.

So far, 28,616 people have been reported to have been infected with the Ebola virus in West-Africa and among them, resulted in the death of 11,310 people meaning around 40% of those infected with the virus resulted in death. Therefore, it is critical that people are aware of how to prevent the spread of Ebola virus.

Unfortunately, there are no vaccines fully developed to oppose the Ebola virus as of current state. However, in order to find out how to minimise the chance of being infected by the virus, read:
